Editorial Review:
When I listen to Guy Finley, the word "magid" comes to mind. The magid was a wandering holy man who played a huge role in the spiritual life of European Jewry. Unlike the Rabbi of a town, who more or less played the role of the spiritual leader of the town, the magid had no official position. He had no congregation and no outer authority. He was part entertainer, prophet, story teller and preacher. He taught the spiritual principles while entertaining the people at the same time. A good magid would draw huge crowds. His coming was an "event" in any town. The magid's job was to remind the people of what they already knew - to remind them of their true selves, of the things that were important in life, of how they could extricate themselves from the grim conditions which they faced in those days, and to deliver the spiritual message that the people needed to hear. The magid would make you laugh, cry and sigh. The Rabbi would teach the law and was involved in all the administrative functions of his community. But the Magid would teach the law and also entertain you. Then he would move on to the next town.
Guy Finley is the American Magid of our age. When you listen to SEVEN STEPS you are going to learn, but you're also going to laugh a lot.
SEVEN STEPS is a beautiful mix of stories, jokes and knowledge. Very folksy. Very understandable. You don't need to be a big intellectual to grasp the meanings here. This is spirituality for everyman.
His forte is the deconstruction of the false ego. Nobody does this the way he does. This is a huge, painstaking process. But this is the thread that I see in all his work. Little by little he analyzes our common (and so-called normal) reactions and shows their falsity - their non-reality. He traces our common psychology to its root - ignorance - ignorance of the True Self.
This deconstruction of the false ego - the unreal identity - is important work. For basically this is the main obstruction to higher consciousness - the main blockage to the flow of unqualified perfection in our lives. And though a person won't rid him or herself of this false identity overnight, every bit of progress made, allows more light to enter.
A worthwhile enterprise.
I may have mentioned this in other reviews, but I especially like the Talk format. Very convenient. You can listen in the car or at home while doing other tasks. Also you get the unique flavor of his voice - the subtle, indefinable energy of the spoken word, that you won't get from a book.
Highly recommendable.
